97 CBR1100XX Restoration Project

06/17/2006

Picked up the bike on 6/17 from Redbird's place. Rough would be a gentle way to describe it.

06/18/2006 - Happy Father's day to ME!

Went through the parts attempting to identify what worked, what didn't what was there, and what was missing.

For the most part, the parts are complete. What is missing usually came with a working substitute.<>

  • Battery that was in it was completely dead. (Came with a spare, that takes a charge)
  • Received a updated gauge set (with a lower odometer reading, even!) along with the actual speedometer gauge from the wreck.
  • Wiring harness is torn where it connects the turn signals, and one of the gauge connectors.
  • Ignition lock is removed from the bike and in a box, along with another ignition lock. The one from the bike is cracked, it appears that the spare one provided is for parts harvesting. Key barely works in the lock though.
  • Rear rim is dented in multiple places
  • Front rim looks OK, although the polishing job needs cleanup.
  • Tires are shot. Rear has a 190 on it instead of a 180 like it's supposed to.
  • Chain is NASTY
  • Sprockets look OK, although I haven't checked the front one.
  • Upper fairing stay is bent, so is the alternative one that was supplied.
  • Scratches on the stator and clutch covers.
  • Oil cooler is bent to all hell. However, a spare oil cooler was included, which is servicable.
  • Exhaust is a 4-1 Yosh. Appears servicable.

    Plastics... well, that's a story.

The upper is broken in a few places, but Mike Barton donated his spare upper, and between the two I should be able to get one servicable one.
The lowers, center V, and mirror covers were covered with a Rhino liner type coating. Not sure yet if I like or hate it.. but for now, they're servicable, which is really what's needed.
The rear plastic cowling and tank have normal wear and tear, but no scratches.

Since it was raining, decided to spend the morning swapping out the odometer (Figured that I best be honest about the miles on the bike) and then I'd work on patching the harness.

Got the odo swap done, and started patching the broken wires. Was going to solder the wires together, but then remembered that I don't solder all that well, and that what I needed to do was add about the length of a good butt splice connector to each of the wires. Took me about 2 hours to get all the wires spliced, and then it was time for the moment of truth. Hook up the gauges, hook up the battery, switch the disconnected ignition to ON... and.. I've got lights, etc. in the dash!!!

Checked the turn signals, the right one works, the left one doesn't. No running lights, either. Crap.. this was in what I repaired. Decide that it's worth looking at later.

Repeated attempts to start the bike simply drain the not fully charged battery. Leave the battery on the charger for a while and take my 2002 XX out for a spin.

After dinner, decide it's time to see why it's not starting. I can smell the gas in the exhaust, so I assume it's about spark. I pull the tank off, and open the airbox. Suprise.. Bike comes with a K&N Air filter. Mess around a bit with the electrical meter, and determine that the coils all have power, etc. Turn the choke up, turn the battery charger to Start (I had had it on trickle charge), and give it one more try... And it fires right up. Assumption is that the battery was still too low to both generate a decent spark and turn the bike over. Once I got it enough amps to do both, it was able to run. I re-assembled everything, and started it one more time. Seems to run pretty good, now that the battery has enough of a charge.

Discovered, however, that the water pump leaks around the seal. Probably going to need a gasket... add it to my list of parts to order.

    06/19/2006 - Monday

Contact University Motors in Fargo with list of parts. Fairing stay, O Rings for the water pump top the list. Receive pricing in the afternoon that it's going to cost less than $100 for the parts, plus shipping.

Stopped by the locksmith with the lock on my way home from work. He informs the that whoever did the key last time used a Kawasaki blank, not a Honda blank, which is why it's so difficult to make it work. He cuts me a new key from the code (then makes me a spare) and it works flawlessly. After dinner, I reassembled the key lock to the bike, and everything's still working except that left turnsignal and running light.

Spend the evening working out the turn signal gremlin. Appears for starters that the turn signal doesn't have a bulb. That solves the reason why the turn signal isn't working, but doesn't help with why the running light doesn't work. I take the extra chunk of wiring harness which was sent with the bike, and start to disassemble it. I find out that the wire in question leads to a connector, and it's only about a foot long. I found the connector, and then started peeling a back the tape around the harness, and about 4 inches back found the break in the wire. Another splice connector, and everything's working! I taped up the harness as best as possible to keep the connectors dry, etc.

Swapped out the oil cooler, a 10 minute job since it has all the fairings removed.

    Here's the pictures so far:

I'd posted on CBR 1100 XX forum for a rear rim, and found out that one of the board members (Josh.. Jbowen4) had one he'd sell me for $80 + shipping, so I ordered that too. Now I just need to wait for parts to arrive! Today I think I'm going to order a chain.....

    06/24/2006 - Saturday

Whoo Hoo!! Got the rear wheel today (Thanks Josh!!)

Pulled the front and rear wheels off and ran them up to have tires mounted. Got there just as they were closing, I'll have them on Monday. Decided for at least the first round of tires, since I have a whole garage full of half used Avon 45/46's, that I might as well go ahead and start off with them.

Since I had the front wheel off, anyways, I figured I might as well swap out the fork oil. Here's some pictures I took while I was doing them:

No comments on the messy garage... cleaning and putting tools away is on my short list of stuff to do next time it rains!

I also received notification that my chain (White Buffalo Racing) will be here on Wednesday, so hopefully IF I get the upper fairing stay and water pump parts, I'll have it at least somewhat close to rideable by the holiday weekend!

    06/26/2006 - Monday

Went out at lunch today and ordered the bolts that will hold the headlight in the upper cowling. Discussed with Jeff (Byrdman) about the upper cowling, and he needs one for an 02, but has a 97, and I need one for a 97, but have a spare 02... So we're going to trade.

Went to pick up the wheels today, and when I got there, the owner's wife told me that the owner had gone home sick around noon, feverish, etc. Great, but no one called to tell me it wasn't going to be done, and I rushed home then rushed over to get there. Was just going to go home and come back the next day, but decided that screw it, who knows if he's going to be there the next day, either, and there's another shop that would do it for the same price. Picked them up and took them over to Mad City Motorsports, who was nice enough to mount and balance both tires, swap the bearings and rotor out of the rear, all for $65. Picked them up and got home in time to get them mounted back on the bike.

Had a fun time, because the left caliper was pretty messy with what appears to be fork oil. I'm hoping that the forks that are on the bike now don't have leaky seals. It looks like they're fine, but I really won't know until I get it out on the street. I know the forks aren't the stock 97's, but instead are from an '01.

Decided to mount the front fender, since that part wouldn't need to come off again. Once I put it on, it looked a bit tweaked to the left:

So, when I put it away tonight, I bungied it up with some pressure on it hoping to get it to straighten out:

Let's hope some real parts get here tomorrow, like the upper fairing stay. I'd like to get serious on the re-assembly, but am really pretty much waiting for that to get here, and the chain. I did discover that the coolant leak is pretty serious, as it's regularly leaving a nice little puddle under the bike. That new gasket should be here with the fairing stay.

    06/28/2006 - Wednesday

Fender still isn't straight. Fortunately, I picked one up on Ebay for $10. Let's hope that it's straight. Looked pretty good in the pictures.

Sent an email off to University Motors, asking about the status of my order. It appears that he water pump seal, and the 02XX air filter I ordered are on back order, so they're delaying shipping the whole thing until that gets here. I told them to ship what they have, it was supposed to go out today. I received the notification from UPS that it would be here on Friday.

I did, however, receive and install the new chain. It was really raining, and wasn't able to wheel the bike out to take pictures afterwards. I took this picture the next day:

    06/29/2006 - Thursday

Spent this evening working on the water pump, trying to fix the coolant leak, since the new o-ring gasket wasn't going to get here any time soon. Drained the coolant, took the water pump apart, cleaned it up as best as I could, and then put it all back together and topped it off with coolant. Something I did must've been right, because after I started the bike and let it warm up a bit, it's not leaking.

I decided that it needed to be run up and down the street a bit, just because, so I took it for a short spin around the block. Seems to ride straight, etc. Looking forward to receiving the upper fairing stay, etc, tomorrow. Would love to be able to take it out for a REAL spin and make sure everything works as expected.

    06/30/2006 - Friday

Received upper fairing stay and most of my parts from University Motors. Spent the evening mounting it on the bike, and attempting to re-attach the fairings. Discovered that I'm missing some things, mostly nuts and bolts. Was able to get the gauges mounted, then had a fun time running the wiring harness the way I think it should go.

Discovered that the center V cowl is missing a tab, and that there is a tab missing from the oil pan, that is intended to hold the lower cowl. I'm probably going to have to replace the oil pan in order to fix it.

At that point, I decided I'd had enough for one night. I posted up on the XX forum about the oil pan, though, and ran a quick scan of Ebay for the center V.

    07/01/2006 - Saturday

Was a busy day for the family here. Spent most of the day out riding my 02, but did receive a reply back that Joe (the gentleman I bought this bike from) has an oil pan and will ship it. The gasket and missing brackets I'll order from the dealer on Wed when they open.

Did take it out for a spin or two around the neighborhood, and I'm pretty impressed with the way it rides. Dumped a can of Seafoam in the tank, though, because it seems to have some sputtering happening if you hold the throttle at the same place.

    07/03/2006 - Monday

Posted a message on the XX board to figure out where the "heat guard" is supposed to go. It just doesn't look like it's supposed to easily fit anywhere on the bike:

I received some replies, but I think I'm going to figure out how to fit it in there as much by trial and error as anything else.

    07/04/2006 - Tuesday

Spent the morning sorting out the heat guard puzzle. Dropped the radiator and oil cooler loose, and was able to fit it in. Sorry, no pictures were taken, I was cussing enough that I didn't even think of the camera.

Once it was in place, I was able to re-fit the upper plastic, and even the side cowls and wind screen. I'll be replacing this upper with the one from Jeff (Byrdman), but wanted to be able to at least take it out and run it for a bit.

It now has the Naked Streetfighter look to it:

Took it out for a REAL spin today, and I'm the seafoam did it's trick about 10 minutes into the ride. The hesitation I was feeling worked itself out, and it felt GREAT. Decided to do some real railing, rode almost 100 miles on it and came home giggling about how well it rides. Must do something about the stock seat, though, either beads or just run my spare corbin on it.

Tomorrow I'll stop by the dealer and order the brackets, gasket, missing nuts and bolts from the upper, etc.

    07/20/2006 - Thursday

Been a bit since I updated this page. Let's see if I can remember what all I've done in the mean time:

The oil pan turned out to be a bit of a pain in the butt. I was able to drain the oil, drop the exhaust, and then the pan, without much trouble. The bike was due for an oil change, anyways. Getting the pan to seat, with drain pipe turned into a fiasco, and of course I didn't want to fill it up with oil right away until it had a chance to set up. Next day, filled it up with oil, ran it around the block, no leaks, etc.

Fortunately, I've had a bit of time to do some other things that the bike needed while the cowl was off. I swapped out the Cam Chain Tensioner with one of the "double green dot" variety, and that made a HUGE difference in engine noise. Also replaced the grips with some nice gel pro grips, and had a buddy of mine Ray polish up some spare bar ends that I had.

Mounted up the brackets for the lower, and picked up some extra fairing stay nuts from the dealer. I sent my center V cowl off to a fellow CBR1100XX.org board member who crashed, and he's going to send me his center V, since he's expecting his bike is totaled. I expect to see that at the end of next week.

Got Jeff's upper cowling back from paint yesterday, it's beautiful! Immediately assembled the bike back together as best as it can go, missing the V cowl:

    Here's the new grips/bar ends:

Discovered that I need one more of the nuts that holds the windscreen in place, I'll order that tomorrow. I decided to replace the screen with the one from my 02 XX, it's a bit higher:

    09/23/2007

Been forever since I updated this page.

Decided I was going to ride it over the winter, when the weather would permit. That meant some things needed to be done:

Here's a picture of the wiring:

I picked up a new stator cover and some lowers over the winter, and sent the lowers off to have them re-painted. I got the lowers back (Thanks Redd!!) back in March, and since then, the bike's been pretty much complete.

I wanted to have a bunch of bits powder coated and I gave them to a friend, who was going to have his frame done black, and we figured it would save some cash if we ran them all together. Well, Dan never came through, mostly because couldn't afford it. Fortunately, KiwiMack on the XX board has been doing powder coating in his spare time, and he offered to do the bits for me.

    Powder coated items:

Quite possibly, the best news out of the whole powder coat experience is that when I removed the upper triple and replaced it with the new one, the tweaking of the front fender went away.

One other key development was the opportunity I received to spend some time with an 01XX which was about to be salvaged. I swapped out the forks (which had Wilburs progressive springs) and I was able to take the stator and regulator/rectifier and wheels from it, so now it's got plenty of power available for additional farkles, and the black wheels look really good with the black powder coating.

Here's the the pictures, it's now pretty much complete. I'm going to have a friend come over and detail it this week, then I think I'll see what I can sell it for.
